The Zoo will stay open until 7:00 PM for extended summer time enjoyment.   Dinner and evening drink specials will be available for purchase, and live music is featured on the Reptile House Lawn. Now through Friday, July 31st - Cat Adoption Fee Reduction
Between warming temperatures and the increasing number of area foreclosures, the Sacramento SPCA is seeing the number of homeless cats and kittens increase at a startling rate.   The Sacramento SPCA is decreasing cat adoption fees by more than half for the months of June and July.   Cat and kitten adoption fees will be $40.00.   All adoptions include a spay or neuter surgery, microchip, vaccinations, a veterinary check and more.   Through its reduction in cat adoption fees, the SPCA hopes to find homes for hundreds of cats and kittens. Now through Friday, July 31st - Call to Artists and Poets
Artists interested in exhibiting their work at North Tahoe ARTS in 2010 are encouraged to call the NTA office for an application or go to northtahoearts.com.   They are looking for a variety of exhibits.   If you are interested in a solo show, or wish to partner with other artists, or have a themed exhibit idea, they would like to hear from you.   Accomplished artists working in all mediums will be considered.   They are seeking contemporary work as well as landscapes, still lifes, portrait artists, potters, jewelers, wood turners, poetry and more.   The North Tahoe ARTS Center has two galleries in Tahoe City.   All applicants will be required to submit a completed application with images of artwork in jpg format on CDs.   An administrative fee of $20 is required and must accompany the application.   The Exhibit Committee will be reviewing all applications.   Wall art, three-dimensional art, and sculpture submissions are encouraged.   For more information, please contact North Tahoe ARTS, (530) 581-2787, Fax (530) 581-2747, or info@northtahoearts.com.

North Tahoe ARTS located above Commons Beach in Tahoe City is accepting applications for a juried show to run in the Corison Loft from September 29 through November 1, 2009.   It is open to all mediums and could be a solo show or a show in partnership with another artist or several artists.   Artwork can be two or three-dimensional; artwork must be framed and ready to hang, or balanced to stand; artwork must be original, done by the artist; application fee is $15; jury will need three 4x6" photos of artwork or a CD and corresponding inventory sheet with prices, medium, and dimensions; The commission schedule will be 70% to the artist and 30% to NTA.   Participants will be asked to volunteer to help with the show.   Please complete an application available by calling (530) 581-2787 or emailing info@northtahoearts.com.
 
Now through Saturday, August 1st - Call to Artists for the ARTisan Shop at North Tahoe ARTS
North Tahoe ARTS provide a venue for artists to sell their work in their shop on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.   Artists must be members of North Tahoe ARTS, sign a contract & pay a yearly fee and be available to volunteer in the shop.   North Tahoe ARTS is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to support the arts in our community through exposure, education, and participation.   Serious artists who are interested in showing and selling their work at North Tahoe ARTS' ARTisan shop are encouraged to call the NTA office for an application or find one on their website, northtahoearts.com.   They are specifically looking for 3D Wall ART; ceramic art; a woodworker; and art that is unique and contemporary.   If you are interested in applying, they would like to hear from   you.   Accomplished artists working in all mediums will be considered.   All applicants will be required to submit a completed application with images of artwork in jpg format on CD's.   The Jury Committee will be reviewing all applications.   For more information, contact North Tahoe ARTS at (530) 581-2787, Fax (530) 581-2747, e-mail info@northtahoearts.com.

The California Auto Museum’s newest quarterly exhibit is Carved Elegance: Woodies, Wheels, and Waves.   This exhibit includes a variety of Woodies illustrating the diverse history of this design style from the early '30s through the '60s.   Also included in this exhibit are art pieces, vintage surfboards, and period memorabilia.   The museum is located at 2200 Front Street in Sacramento.   For more information, go to calautomuseum.org.
 
Now through Wednesday, September 30th – Paid Research Volunteers Needed  
UC Davis Nutrition Scientists are running a six-week research study that examines the effects of a Lychee Fruit Extract on cardiovascular health.   The study requires 5 visits to the Ragle Human Nutrition Center located on the UC Davis Campus.   They need postmenopausal women aged 52-65.   You will receive compensation and lab results.   Applicants will be accepted until September.   For more info, call (530)752-2915 or email lychee@ucdavis.edu.

Friday, July 3rd through Saturday, July 4th – Fourth of July Weekend at South Lake Tahoe
Lights on the Lake, South Lake Tahoe’s Fourth of July fireworks display will once again ignite the alpine sky.   This is the largest West Coast fireworks extravaganza and best of all, it’s free.   Visitors can expect the Lights on the Lake bombardments to explode into unusual shapes such as jellyfish, stars, butterflies, cubes, and smiley faces.   It will be choreographed to music simulcasts on local radio stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL-AM 1490.   Numerous vantage points include:   South Lake Tahoe’s two paddle wheelers, the Tahoe Queen and M.S. Dixie II, offering special dining/viewing packages; The Tallac Historic Site, off Emerald Bay Road has an east-viewing perspective while nearby Baldwin Beach has picnic tables and fire pits; Nevada Beach State Park has a sandy shoreline with barbecues and picnic tables; Regan and El Dorado Beaches offers front-and-center seating that fills up fast; Bijou Community Park is set back from the shoreline and has many amenities such as a skate park, disc golf course, dog park, municipal golf course and playground.   Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course presents their July Fourth barbeque bash with a prime location for viewing Lights on the Lake, and an all-you-can-eat buffet with Jamaican Jerk Chicken, sweet soy marinated salmon, hamburgers and hot dogs.   This sells out fast.   Tickets $50 tickets for adults, $20 for kids 10 and under are available at Activity Tickets.   The Tallac Historic site presents Vahalla’s ongoing Big Blue Summer MusicFest.   The vintage Tahoe venue features Red White and Toccata-Tahoe Blue, July 3, a concert of American composers in the historic Boathouse Theater. Saturday, July 11th – 9:00 to 10:30 PM - Big Bend Star Gazing
This 90-minute sky tour takes you through sky wonders using telescopes owned and operated by Don Machholz and other astronomers.   See Saturn, stars, star clusters, and galaxies.   Big Bend is a ranger station 30 miles above Colfax, along Hwy 80.   Please arrive on time for the 10-minute orientation talk and plan to stay for the full 90 minutes.   In case of poor weather, the session is canceled.   Bring plenty of warm clothes; even in the summer it gets cold at 5800 feet elevation.   This is a family friendly event.   Restrooms are nearby.   To get there, take Interstate 80 towards Reno and go beyond Colfax, Blue Canyon and Emigrant Gap.   The Big Bend exit is the first one past Cisco Grove.   At the bottom of the off-ramp turn left, travel one-half mile and continue past the USFS Visitor Center.   Look for the Loch Leven trailhead parking lot and the stargazing signs.   They set up in that parking lot.   Residents in the Grass Valley area can take Highway 20 to Interstate 80 eastbound, and then exit at Big Bend.   For more information on all of Don’s astronomy activities, and the 2009 schedule of future astronomy events, go to thecomethunter.com.

Mustangs & Merlot is a fundraiser for the American Mustang Foundation.   Special guest, widely published and critically acclaimed writer Deanne Stillman, will be doing a reading and signing of her book, “Mustang: The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West.”   Two locally renowned equine artists, B. K. Wednesday, August 12th through Sunday, August 16th – 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM - 2009 Nevada County Fair
“A Hare's Magical A-Fair!” is the Nevada County Fair's theme this year. There will be free entertainment, carnival rides and games, barns full of livestock, singers, thrill acts, karaoke, a special events tent with interactive games, magic shows, daily competitions, food contests, thousands of exhibits, and food.   Long-time crowd pleasing motor sports events will soar into the Fair's arena Wednesday through Sunday, presenting thrills ranging from a rodeo to Monster Trucks to the final night's Demolition Derby.   The Ag Mechanics Auction will be held on Friday of the Fair, and the Junior Livestock Auction will be held on Sunday. This 90-minute sky tour takes you through sky wonders using telescopes owned and operated by Don Machholz and other astronomers.   See Jupiter, Neptune, stars, star clusters, and galaxies.   Big Bend is a ranger station 30 miles above Colfax, along Hwy 80.   Please arrive on time for the 10-minute orientation talk and plan to stay for the full 90 minutes.   In case of poor weather, the session is canceled.   Bring plenty of warm clothes; even in the summer it gets cold at 5800 feet elevation.   This is a family friendly event.   Restrooms are nearby.   To get there, take Interstate 80 towards Reno and go beyond Colfax, Blue Canyon and Emigrant Gap.   The Big Bend exit is the first one past Cisco Grove.   At the bottom of the off-ramp turn left, travel one-half mile and continue past the USFS Visitor Center.   Look for the Loch Leven trailhead parking lot and the stargazing signs.   They set up in that parking lot. Boys and girls in the 5th-9th grade and their adult buddy can find out in this 2-3 hour hands-on workshop at the California Auto Museum.   Kids get to take apart a Briggs and Stratton one cylinder engine and learn how solids, liquids, and gasses interact to make it run.   Then a variety of engines will be fired up to see how each gets their specific job done.   There is no driving or riding involved, and you won’t get greasy (although they do promise lots of noise and smoke).   $25 per student accompanied by an adult (includes handouts and Museum admission).   Seats are limited and pre-registration is required.   Please call (916) 442-6802 or visit calautomuseum.org to sign up today.

Looking for a unique outing?   Then join the Sacramento Zoo for a cup of tea, a bite to eat, and a fascinating guided tour of the Sacramento Zoo.   This seniors-only program is for ages 55 and over.   Your group will be met by docents (volunteer educators) and will tour part of the Zoo.   During the tea break, you’ll be served tea, lemonade, coffee, finger sandwiches, breads and cookies.   At that time, guests will hear about the good things happening at the Zoo.   The program begins at the front entrance of the Zoo and will last until about noon.   $12.00 per person includes tea, tour, and admission to the Zoo. Run, walk, swim, paddle, pedal, or golf during one of the many Lake Tahoe Marathon events.   All of the runs are point-to-point and scenic from start to finish.   Both the half and full marathons are run along the west shore of Lake Tahoe and feature challenging hills around Emerald Bay.   The 10K, which begins at Inspiration Point above Emerald Bay, is 99% downhill and covers the most spectacular portion of the route. Thursday, September 24th through Sunday, September 27th – Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair

The 5th season of the Placer Nature Center's 4th Friday Lecture Series kicks-off with Dr. Tim Horner, Ph. Beneath the thin veil, the bride’s face is a composition of emotions.   The ceremony

CALIFORNIA AUTO MUSEUM
The Towe Auto Museum is now officially the California Automobile Museum. The museum offers Lectures, classes, special events, and concerts - see listings in the calendar section above.   Touch Tours is an endeavor to share the joy of experiencing a beautiful automobile with those who can’t appreciate the vehicles on exhibit with their eyes. The program is based on tactile exploration of a variety of the cars within the Museum and is sponsored by the local Country Club Lions Club, a chapter of the International Lions Club.   The newest exhibit is not about the past, but the years ahead, as it highlights the futuristic technology that is expected to power low-polluting, environmentally advanced cars.   The exhibit showcases a range of vehicles that span the turn of the 20th century to the early years of the 21st century, including prototype experimental vehicles that have helped develop hydrogen fuel cells, as well as electric plug-in technology that is expected to be widely available in the next five years.   Among the cars featured is one of only 12 surviving models of the EV-1, an all-electric prototype manufactured by General Motors between 1991 and 2003; The Joule, an experimental gasoline/electric hybrid built by students at the UC Davis FutureCar Project; and The Necar 4, a fourth-generation Mercedes Benz that uses a hydrogen fuel cell to generate electricity.
