Dena Hangaard, for her Senior Project at Placer High School, is making two quilts, as well as collecting quilts and sewing supplies for HIV/AIDS orphans in Ethiopia through the Quilts Beyond Borders organization so they can have something to hang on to that won’t leave them. Quilts sized 42 by 60", 42 by 54", and 42 by 42" are greatly accepted, as well as fabric, batting, sewing supplies, mats, pins, and rulers so the organization can teach women in Ethiopia to make their own quilts. "Disappearing Landscapes" Art Event and Sale. Show of 29 regional area artists, featuring Placer Land Trust Preserves at Latitudes Restaurant, 130 Maple St., Auburn. Sales benefit Placer Land Trust in their efforts to work with willing landowners and conservation partners to permanently preserve natural and agricultural land in Placer County for future generations. The public is welcome to the Annual Lincoln Business Expo at Mc Bean Park Pavilion in Lincoln. Caltrans will be there to update the public on the new Highway 65 bypass project and the impact this project has on the community. The City of Auburn, Nella Oil Company, & the Auburn Aviation Association (AAA) are currently hosting a concept contest to represent the Aug. 2, 2008 Auburn AirFair. This year's theme is "The Wings of Eagles ...Passing Aviation to the Next Generation." Entries should reflect the theme. The public is invited to meet and greet Chet Blackburn, coordinator and co-author of “Wildflowers of Nevada and Placer Counties, California” at Placer Nature Center. In addition to the chance to buy your own copy of the new book, and meet the author, Placer Nature Center volunteers and staff will be leading wildflower walks in the 60 acre woodland surrounding the Center.   The trail is moderate and suitable for children of all ages.   People with special needs may also view wildflowers

Award-winning, international recording star Chris Spheeris is slated to perform at the Cal Neva in Crystal Bay, Nev. in a benefit concert/art show for Arts For the Schools, a non-profit organization that enhances local children's education and fosters a lifelong love of the creative arts. Spheeris' distinctive musical talents helped to pioneer the New Age instrumental music movement. Sponsored by For Goodness Sake, of Truckee, Calif., the Crystal Bay event represents the launch of a new multi-media performance that fuses art and music. The National Association of Letter Carriers will conduct their annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive. This has become the largest single-day food drive in the U.S. In the Auburn area, it will be the 16th annual effort by postal employees to help restock the shelves at the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet, the Salvation Army and Seventh-Day Adventist Community Services. Just place bags filled with nonperishable food items next to your mailbox on the morning of May 10th. Your letter carrier will pick them up on his or her route, and have them delivered to local agencies feeding the hungry. Items most needed are canned meats and fish, canned soup, juices, pasta, canned vegetables and fruits, cereal, and rice. Please do not include items in glass containers or those that have expired dates. If you live in a rural area, check with your letter carrier for pick up or take food items to your local post office. During the week prior to May 10 reminder post cards will be delivered to every household. You are invited to attend the annual Spring Open House at Empire Mine State Historic Park. Activities will include living history presentations in the Bourn Cottage, Mine Yard and Clubhouse. In the “cottage,” volunteers will be dressed in period costumes and will re-create characters from the Empire Mine’s colorful past. There will also be live music throughout the day. Mr. & Mrs. Bourn and their guests will greet you and speak to you as if you were visiting in the year 1905. In the mine yard, volunteers portray workers of the past and enact a working day at the mine. Meet the office staff and other mine workers, see and hear working machinery, smell the blacksmiths burning coal, and feel the coolness of the mineshaft. This year they encourage the ladies to don their fancy bonnets while they stroll the Park plus it will allow them 10% off any purchase of a potted plant, including roses. The gardens should be blooming and you will have the opportunity to purchase heirloom plants propagated in the greenhouses. The gift shop will be open with various gift items and mineral specimens for purchase. Locally known Sweeneys Weenies will be providing various hotdogs & beverages plus Lazy Dog Confections will have their wonderful ice cream selections. Children will have the fun of decorating a potted plant for a Mother’s Day gift. All proceeds benefit the Empire Mine Park Association in its ongoing programs to restore the historic buildings and grounds and to enhance educational opportunities at the Park. Six Nevada County museums and historic sites have joined together to host Nevada County Museum Discovery Day. All six museums will offer free admission to all guests on Museum Discovery Day, and special prizes will be available for youngsters who answer written questions about the museums they visit. The museums of Grass Valley and Nevada City offer a range of historical exhibits covering subjects from the Gold Rush to the Victorian Age, the Donner Party, early California railroading, Native American and California Chinese history and more. Join the Sacramento SPCA, Revolution Wines and WEAVE for "Yappy Hour", a fund-raising celebration at Revolution Wines located at 2116 P Street, Sacramento. This year, organizers Coral Henning and Gabriel Grant invite dog owners and their dogs to socialize with pet-friendly businesses and people to raise money for the Domestic Violence Pet Program, which supports victims of domestic violence by caring for their pets while they are in a shelter. This program allows women to leave a violent situation without worrying about their pet's welfare, and it gives the animals a safe place to reside in the meantime. With an entry donation of only $10-20, Yappy Hour will feature a raffle of exciting prizes, as well as food and wine donated from local mid-town businesses. Last year, with the help of nearly 60 pet owners, Yappy Hour raised over $1200 to benefit the Loaves and Fishes homeless pet program, this year's goal - $2000! Rick's mother married Vernon Presley, Elvis's father, and Rick and his brothers were picked up by his mother and new step-father and moved into Graceland, Elvis Presley's home in Memphis, Tennessee. --THE PLACER COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
The Placer County Genealogical Society has a membership of about 125 that is made up of individuals and families that have historical and genealogical interests.   The group holds a general meeting at the Auburn library site from 7-9PM on the fourth Thursday of each month, except December, and features a program speaker on various genealogical subjects.   The group also offers two specialty day groups that meet from 10AM to noon.   One, the Day Study Group, studies various topics of member interest and meets at the library the second Monday of each month except July, August and December. The other, the Family Tree Maker User Group, reviews genealogy computer program subjects on the second Thursday of the month, and meets at the

--NEVADA COUNTY NARROW GAUGE RAILROAD MUSEUM
Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum is dedicated to the preservation of local transportation history and artifacts from the narrow gauge railroad era. Its largest exhibit is Engine 5, built in 1875, which first hauled lumber, then passengers and freight for the NCNGRR, and ended its active career as a movie engine for Universal Studios. The museum, which is affiliated with the Nevada County Historical Society, also offers a collection of railroad artifacts, photos, and documents as well as the county’s first steam automobile and displays of aviation history. This will be a support group for veterans of ALL AGES-an opportunity to meet and share experiences and wisdom. Groups are held the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month from 10:30-11:30 at the Rocklin Sunset Center 2650 Sunset Blvd. in Rocklin. Come join this support group for senior (55 and over) single women without children to share problems and solutions! --MAIDU INTERPRETIVE CENTER
***Saturday, April 5th through December, 2008 – 6:00 to 8:00 PM
Exhibit Reception: Discovery, Devastation, Survival: California Indians and the Gold Rush at the Maidu Interpretive Center, with a special tribute to and unveiling of a portrait of Mountain Maidu weaver, Lilly Baker. The exhibit examines the impact of the gold rush and highlights several native families whose ancestors survived this devastating period. The exhibit also offers examples of the continuing richness of native California culture through its baskets, jewelry, art and literature.  
***Maidu Interpretive Center offers special events, homeschool and Scout classes, summer camps, live animal shows, classes, nature camps, activities, exhibits, Wildlife in the Woods, Campfire under the Stars, crafts, archery classes, Night Prowl, free admission days, and more. --STUTTERING SUPPORT GROUP
A support group for individuals concerned about stuttering
In children and adults by Nancy Barcal M. A. CCC-SLP. The goal is to provide information about the cause, prevention and treatment of stuttering and to dispel myths. Call for information if you cannot attend. Who should attend: Teachers, Doctors, Nurses, People Who Stutter (PWS), Family Members of People Who Stutter, Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Mental Health Professionals. The group meets the third Tuesday of each month. There is no fee for attending, however, we request that you call or email to reserve a spot at least 48 hours in advance. Car Club Cavalcade at the Towe Auto Museum. The Austin Bantam Society is displaying vehicles. The Austin Bantam Society (ABS) was founded in 1969 as the Pacific Bantam Austin Club to promote and stimulate interest in the restoration and preservation of American Austin and Bantam vehicles. Recently its charter has been expanded to include pre-war English Austins and derivative cars such as Dixi, Rosengart and Datsun. Modified cars of these marques are welcome too. Timed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the world's first-ever pro midget race at Highes Stadium at Sacramento City College, the "Mighty Midgets" exhibit will highlight the history of midget racing. It will show just how this unique form of racer can excite, thrill, and compete just as well as what most people think of a "race car." Midgets on exhibit will include a 1936 Gilmore Special "Flat Tail," a 1937 Dreyer/V8-60, a 1940s Kurtis/ChevyII, a late 1970s Diego/Volkswagen, a 1969 Benson/Chevy II, and a 1946 Kurtis Midget Racer/V8-60.
