Wednesday, February 1 - Sierra Montessori Academy to Implement Independent Study
Sierra Montessori Academy, a tuition-free public charter school located in South Nevada County, will be starting an Independent Study Program beginning February 1. Space is limited, but students K-8 are welcome. Joan Harris, one of Sierra Montessori Academy’s specialists, will be offering training for parents who are unfamiliar with the Montessori method. Wednesday, February 1 – 6:00 p.m. - Auburn Aviation Association’s Monthly Pot Luck Dinner Meeting
The Auburn Aviation Association will hold its monthly pot luck dinner meeting at the Auburn Airport terminal building located at the end of New Airport Road. They meet the first Wednesday of each month. Anyone who has an interest in aviation or the local aviation scene is welcome to attend. The speaker for the February meeting will be Mark Oswiler, who will talk about his WW II Stalag 17 POW experience. Thursday, February 2 – 11:00 a.m. - Sons In Retirement Monthly Luncheon
Sons In Retirement (SIR) Branch 37 will hold their monthly luncheon at the Elks Lodge, 195 Pine St., in Auburn. Fellowship/Social hour begins at 11:00 a.m. Lunch with Salisbury Steak and fish, etc., will be at noon. The guest speaker will be Tom Harper, former information technology consultant and currently a fruit grower and bee keeper in the Auburn area. Tom will discuss the various aspects of bees and bee keeping, including Colony Collapse Disorder and Africanized bees. SIR is a Nonprofit Public Benefit Organization for Retired Men Devoted to Promoting the Independence and Dignity of Retirement. It's a statewide organization with over 100 branches and almost 20,000 members, founded in 1958. Prospective members are always welcome. The only expense is the cost of the lunch. Thursday, February 2 – 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. - Anew Day’s Counseling Skills Workshop
This class starts February 2 and will meet weekly for 12 weeks. Ever wondered what to say or how to respond to someone in pain? This class can help answer those questions for you. Thursday, February 2 – 7:00 p.m. - McClintock Opponent to Speak in Auburn  
Congressional candidate Jack Uppal, who will be challenging Rep. Tom McClintock in newly-drawn Congressional District 4, will speak to the Auburn Area Democratic Club in the Auburn Library. Uppal rose from humble beginnings in India, became an American citizen, and went on to a successful career in the semiconductor industry, including 20 years at Intel. A Lincoln resident and self-described moderate, Uppal will focus on what he says is McClintock’s record of consistently voting for legislation that benefits only the wealthy and special interests. Uppal believes the key to economic recovery is a strong middle class. Uppal will present his vision for restoring the economy, creating jobs, and establishing responsive Congressional representation in the new foothills district. Thursday, February 2 – 7:30 p.m. - Sierra Foothills Audubon Society February 2012 General Meeting
The speaker will be Will Richardson on the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science. The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) is a member-supported nonprofit seeking to advance the natural history, conservation, and ecosystem knowledge of the Tahoe region through science, education, and outreach. TINS has a long-term goal of bringing a world-class interpretive nature center and educational facility to the Tahoe area, but in the meantime, engage in a diversity of programs to promote greater appreciation, understanding, and stewardship of the natural resources of the Tahoe region. This talk will be held in the Community Room of the Nevada County Library on Maidu Avenue in Nevada City. Will will present an overview of what TINS is doing, with a focus on their outreach, citizen science, and research programs. He will highlight a few of the research projects for more in-depth discussion, illustrated with lots of photographs. This is presented by Courage to Be You, Inc. (C2BU), a locally-operated and faith-based non-profit founded on the principle that each and every life not only has value, but a unique purpose and destiny. C2BU is presenting the message that “you were created on purpose for a purpose™.” This one-of-a-kind Courage Conference for men, women, and teens will be held at Adventure Christian Church, 6401 Stanford Ranch Road, in Roseville. The Courage Conference encourages and equips individuals for this journey of purpose in a variety of ways, such as inspirational music, thought-provoking drama, moving dance performances, and Bible-based inspirational messages from passionate speakers. GCWR is pleased to offer their annual Wildlife Orientation & Training, open to the public. Do you enjoy watching the wildlife in your backyard? Would you like to learn more about ways that you can help injured and orphaned wildlife, and assist in helping them return to the wild? Would you like to become a Wildlife Rehabilitator? Would you like to meet their live educational animal ambassadors? If you've answered yes to any of these questions, then this program is for you. The GCWR Wildlife Orientation & Training includes: Guest speakers, including Carol L. Malnor, author, educator, and President of Sierra Foothills Audubon Society; wildlife rehabilitation displays; wildlife store; plus you'll have a chance to get up-close and personal with their live animal ambassadors including a Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Great Horned Owl, Screech Owl, and more. Saturday, February 4 – 4:00 p.m. - 2nd Annual Thank a Veteran Dinner
The Auburn Elks Lodge is holding their 2nd Annual Thank a Veteran Dinner. Cocktails will be at 4:00 p.m., with a buffet dinner to be served at 5:00 p.m. Veterans will receive a free dinner, while all others will pay $10. The meal will have as the main entrees pasta and pulled pork, along with mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetables, salad, bread, and dessert. The Elks Lodge is located at 195 Pine Street in Auburn. Saturday, February 4 – Poor Man’s Whiskey
Some incredible shows are coming to the Auburn Event Center & Dance-a-torium, and this is one of them. Poor Man's Whiskey has headlined sold out shows at the Fillmore. This concert will feature the incredible lead guitar work of Sean Lehe, and a very special guest will be joining on Fiddle. If that's not enough, Achilles Wheel will be celebrating the release of their Debut CD, and features Paul Kamm, Jonny Mojo Flores, Gary Campus, Mark McCartney, and Shelby Snow who have come together from some incredible bands to basically create an All-Star Country-Jam-Bluegrass-Americana -Funk-GD - Dance band. Quilted Blessings, a quilting outreach ministry of the Loomis Basin Congregational United Church of Christ, will have a quilting workshop. This will be held at the Blue Goose Event Center, 3550 Taylor Road, in Loomis. Net proceeds benefit the Blue Goose Project. Wednesday, February 8 – 6:00 p.m. – Citizen Information Workshop
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will host a free, two-hour information session in Folsom at the library located at 411 Stafford Street. The session is part of a larger USCIS initiative to help immigrants better understand the naturalization process, including the content of the naturalization test, and become familiar with free educational resources and materials available from the agency. The public is invited, and USCIS officers will be on hand to discuss the naturalization process step-by-step, and provide information about eligibility and residency requirements, application forms, fees, the background security check, and processing times. They will demonstrate the citizenship interview and answer questions about it. Participants will also see sample questions from the citizenship test and receive an overview of U.S. history and civic principles. Free educational materials will be given out while supplies last. Thursday, February 9 – 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. - Singathon 2012  
SCSO Conductor Donald Kendrick and the Sacramento Choral Society will once again raise a collective voice for the arts at Singathon 2012. The SCSO’s annual fundraiser will take place at the Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights in front of Macy’s Women’s Store. The event will feature members of the SCSO singing great Broadway tunes by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Lowe, and many others. Joining the group on keyboard will be the SCSO’s new accompanist Ryan Enright. The SCSO hopes to raise $30,000 to help offset production and education and outreach expenses for the Spring 2012 season. Sunrise Mall shoppers of all ages often receive spontaneous conducting and dance lessons from conductor Donald Kendrick at this event. The Auburn Symphony presents KinderKonzert. Maestro Goodwin introduces the selections and the instruments of the orchestra in a program designed to inspire children to a lasting love of classical music. Twelve-year-old Young Artist Competition winner Alexis Keller is the featured violin soloist. The program includes Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz" and Saint-Saens' "Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah." The Sacramento Weavers’ & Spinners’ Guild welcomes everyone to their 53rd Annual Open House featuring fascinating demonstrations of weaving and spinning, exhibits of handmade items, a drawing, and sales of handmade articles made by Guild members. There will be many different looms and spinning wheels on display. Guild members will be available to answer questions and to assist visitors interested in working on a loom or learning how to spin. ARNHA's new Distinguished Speaker Series is a series that features a variety of topics and speakers at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center in Carmichael. Saturday, February 18 and Sunday, February 19 - 20th Annual Mardi Gras Weekend in Historic Nevada City
Enjoy events throughout the weekend. The Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball featuring the Holcomb Brothers Band with traditional Cajun food available will be held at Miners Foundry, 325 Spring Street, Nevada City, on Saturday from 8:00 p.m. to midnight. Affairs To Remember announces the production of their comedy murder mystery “The Speakeasy Murders.” Written and directed by David B. Atkinson, “The Speakeasy Murders” draws directly from the history of the Prohibition Era and brings to life some of the very colorful characters from that era. As a delicious gourmet dinner is served, the characters wander around among the tables visiting with the audience, dropping clues, and blaming one another between scenes as the plot thickens. The murder mystery will be performed at Lou La Bonte’s Dinner Theatre at 13460 Lincoln Way in Auburn. The special opening night performance on December 31 will include an after-party with noise makers and champagne. Now through February- Canstruction
The Nationwide charity event, Canstruction, will add Sacramento as a venue this spring, and teams and sponsors are now being recruited. The event will take place at Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights on April 26-29, and feature teams of five people constructing structures made entirely of canned foods. All proceeds from the event benefit the California Emergency FoodLink. Teams usually represent architects, engineers, and contractors, but anyone is welcome to join. There is room for only 10 teams. It starts with one can to feed the hungry, to lift the spirit, to change the world. Canstruction is using one can of food as a catalyst for change. One can to represent the building blocks of massive sculptures. One can to prove that every act of kindness makes a difference. Since 1992, Canstruction has contributed over 17.5 million pounds of food to community food banks demonstrating that we can win the fight against hunger. This popular program is open to all children, and it is especially successful with reluctant or struggling readers. George is non-judgmental and fun to read to. Pre-readers can show her a picture book or tell her a story. Children can use this as an opportunity to practice their reading skills and build their confidence by reading aloud to a book-loving dog. The Auburn 49er Lions will be hosting the 26th annual Celebrity Chefs Cooking for Community Service event. It will again be held in the Placer Building of the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The organization chosen to receive the proceeds from this event is the Forgotten Soldier Program. This program promotes the social, spiritual, and emotional well-being of members of our military, and assists in a smooth transition back to civilian life.
